Japan is on track for a record year: about 428 AI-named companies in 2026 (178 already formed by 2026-05-29, up 24% on 2025). By 2025, roughly 1 in 465 brand-new companies was AI-named (0.215% of all formations).

Because we hold Japan's full register, we can show AI-named companies as a share of all new formations, which controls for the general pace of company formation. It rose from 0.043% in 2022 to 0.215% in 2025, a 5x increase.
🇯🇵 Japan: companies actually born each year (is AI driving company creation overall?)
The true number of new companies each year, from official statistics, which count every incorporation including companies since dissolved. (Our own register snapshot holds only survivors, so it understates older years; this corrects that.) Total company formation rose only about 1.2x from 2018 to 2024, in line with the ~1.2x typical elsewhere, while AI-named formation's share of it rose about 5x. So AI is rising as a share of all new companies; it is not that company creation in general boomed.

AI-named formations in Japan jumped 2.1x in a single year from 2022 to 2023, the clearest local fingerprint of the post-ChatGPT shift (ChatGPT launched November 2022).

- An "AI-named company" is one whose registered name signals AI. Every candidate is classified by a language-aware model to remove false positives (for example estate agents, or words that merely contain the letters "AI").
